The Tamu (Gurung) indigenous people, originally from Nepal, are proud of their cultural heritage and values and the characteristically honest, sincere, guileless and selfless ilk. We the Tamu people establish Tamu Dhee Canada to unite Tamu people in Ontario and across Canada as extended family to love and care each other and preserving, promoting and celebrating Tamu cultural heritage.

Vision

An Ontario-based cohesive and inclusive Tamu Community that is well integrated with the broader Canada-wide Tamu communities that afford a united and larger Tamu fraternity; inter-generational transmission of Tamu culture and values, thus connecting with the cultural roots and enriching the Canadian multiculturalism, and serving the humanity in general and Tamu community in particular.

Mission

The mission objectives of the Tamu Dhee Canada to attain its vision are:

  • Bring together the Tamus in the GTA and Ontario into a fold by establishing and sustaining a vibrant and all-inclusive organized Tamu community
  • Celebrate the Tamu traditional cultural festivities on an annual basis that afford promotion and preservation of Tamu cultural heritage, inclusive of language, in Ontario and across Canada
  • Develop the humanitarian assistance aspect into a strong component of the Tamu community with the motto of serving the community and humanity
  • Collaborate with the other Nepali and non-Nepali community-based organizations in socio-cultural and humanitarian initiatives

TDC’s operations and actions are guided by values, namely, inclusivity, empathy, compassion, altruism, mutual respect and love.

Objectives

As a common “Dhee” (home) of Tamus in Canada, the specific objectives are:

  • To promote legitimate common interests and support each other to integrate well as productive and respectable citizens or residents of Canada, which may be accomplished through activities such as welcoming newcomers, celebrating achievements/milestones, sharing relevant information, organizing social annual events, namely, summer picnic, Lhosar, and Cheli-beti karyakram, among others.
  • To provide support, and care and comfort to members facing difficult times, such as, illness or loss of family members through social accompaniment with emotional and psychological support inclusive of traditional practices of doing “syawai syawai” and offering “Pai ru or Ri pu”.
  • To collectively celebrate Tamu Lhosar (new year) as a community and create awareness among younger generation.
  • To offer a platform for social events such as Cheli-beti bhetghat, the Himalayan Cup Volleyball tournament and Deusi-bhailo celebration.
  • To explore ways of preserving and promoting Tamu kyuei (Tamu language).
  • To support charitable/philanthropic projects and activities in Canada and Nepal.

Ad-Hoc Committee

  • The Ad-Hoc Committee runs the business of TDC supported by a panel of advisors.
  • The Committee has a term of two years.
  • The Ad-Hoc Committee is supported by two volunteers to maintain its book-keeping.
